So France Is Co – Notebook No. 3

The origin of denim: a workwear fabric that became a legend

People often assume denim was born in a fashion studio.
In reality, it was born in dust, labor, and wear. And that’s exactly why I love it…

Denim was never meant to be pretty

Originally, denim was a utilitarian fabric. A fabric designed to endure, not to seduce.
Its name is said to come from “de Nîmes”, a sturdy cloth made in France before being popularized elsewhere. A tightly woven fabric, dyed with indigo, built to withstand long days, repetitive movements, and a hard life.

Denim was first and foremost the fabric of workers — miners, laborers, manual trades. A fabric meant to last. Meant to hold up. Meant to accompany, not constrain.

And that’s where it all begins.

How jeans became universal

When denim crossed the Atlantic, it became the symbol of American workwear. Then, almost without warning, it left the job sites. It entered the streets. Music. Counterculture. Jeans became political, social, cultural.

What fascinates me is that denim never changed its nature.
It’s our perception of it that evolved.

Always the same fabric. Always the same logic: an honest garment, one that lives with the person who wears it.

WHEN DENIM HERITAGE SHAPES AN IDENTITY

Understanding denim also means understanding why So France Is Co evolved its logo.
An identity designed as an artisanal signature, faithful to the long-term nature of denim.

Denim, a fabric shaped by time

Good denim never stays still. It develops a patina. It bears marks. It transforms. Every crease, every sign of wear tells a story. Yours.

That’s why I deeply believe denim stands in opposition to fast fashion. It requires time. It rewards patience. It belongs to a long-term relationship between a garment and the person who wears it.

Jeans aren’t meant to be consumed.
They’re meant to be lived in.

Why denim culture is at the heart of So France Is Co?

When I launched So France Is Co, I never wanted to “make jeans.” I wanted to respect what denim truly is. A demanding fabric, one that deserves to be worked with seriousness. Cut with precision. Made locally, without shortcuts.

That’s why our jeans are Made in France.
Because a fabric born of labor deserves to be crafted with respect for labor.

Denim is not a passing trend. It is a living heritage. And as long as there are people who believe in fine materials, in garments that last, and in the stories we carry on our bodies, denim will always have something to say.

And at So France Is Co, we fully intend to keep listening.
